The Best Snack Bars

Q: Michelle said...

Hey Alvin
was going over some of your daily menu suggestions on your blog and wanted to know what kind of protein bars for afternoon or morning snacks do you recommend?

A: AP FIT says...

Hi Michelle,
The very best bars are actually not bars at all. Bars and shakes are convenient but at the end of the day most of them come pre-loaded with excess carbs, sugars and ingredients you do not know about. If you have the spare time...

...make yourself a healthy snack instead. Grab a kiwi, cottage cheese and some almonds and you've got your carbs, proteins and fats covered respectively. You can also make a small pita turkey sandwich or wrap with some avocado! Things like that are preferable because the nutrients found in food are consumed by the body much quicker than those in supplements. Also, you know exactly what you put in your foods. No extra sugars for flavors, no extra fats, no extra crap!

However I must add that if time is not something you can spare ( I sure can't so I block off one day and cook for the entire week) then bars make snacking almost brainless, open and eat and problem solved! If you are going to have a bar...READ THE LABELS...you want something low in calorie, low in sugars and not exceeding 15g-25g of carbs for a lady. Your proteins should not be less than 10g-15g. Grab a few bars and compare, safest bet is to always go with the one that is the lowest in carbs, calories, sugars, sodium and fat out of all of them but like I always tell everyone, "nutrition before supplementation"...ALWAYS! Choose real food as often as possible and in all honesty making a quick snack like a wrap or a sandwich takes less than 5 minutes most of the time. =)
